Elephant Trunk Hill and Li River scenery in Guilin city
Elephant Trunk Hill and Li River scenery in Guilin city

Bottom line: Guilin is best explored over 4–5 days in spring or autumn. A rental car unlocks Longji, Yangshuo back roads, and sunrise viewpoints, while the Li River cruise and Guilin city are easy without a vehicle.

Important: Check your legal eligibility before renting a car

International Driving Permits are not officially recognized for driving in mainland China. You need a valid Chinese driver's license to rent and drive a car legally. Always verify current requirements with the rental provider and local traffic authority before you book.

Why visit Guilin

Guilin city skyline with karst mountain backdrop
Guilin city skyline with karst mountain backdrop

Guilin sits in the northeast of Guangxi, where the Li River cuts through one of the world's most recognizable karst landscapes. The city itself is a gateway, but the real highlights lie in the surrounding countryside: Yangshuo's rural roads, Longji's rice terraces, and the river scenes that have inspired Chinese painters for centuries.

For international travelers, Guilin works as a standalone destination or as part of a longer China or Guangxi trip. It is compact enough to cover in a few days, varied enough to reward a full week, and accessible enough for first-time visitors to China.

Transportation

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) has direct flights from most major Chinese cities and some international routes. The city is also connected by high-speed rail to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong West Kowloon, and other regional hubs.

Within Guilin, you have four main options:

For a complete comparison of routes and transport modes, see our Guilin transportation guide.

Visa & entry notes

Check current Chinese visa requirements before booking. Most travelers need a visa, though some nationalities qualify for visa-free transit or regional policies. Apply through the official China Visa Application Service Center and confirm the latest rules with your embassy. Carry your passport for train tickets, hotel check-in, and car rental pickup.

Top attractions

Guilin's attractions fall into three zones. We cover each in detail in our attraction guides.

Yangshuo

Food

Guilin cuisine is rice-based, spicy, and sour. Standout dishes include Guilin rice noodles (mifen), beer fish from Yangshuo, stuffed Li River snails, and taro with pork. Yangshuo's West Street has tourist-oriented restaurants; for better value, eat where locals eat on the side streets.

Hotels

Where you stay depends on your transport plan. With a car, you can choose hotels slightly outside the busiest centers and gain quieter nights plus easier parking. See our hotels with parking guide.

Self-drive options

Renting a car in Guilin is straightforward if you have the required license. Major rental brands and local agencies operate at the airport and downtown. For full requirements, routes, and rules, see our self-drive guide.
