Home Return Permit entry, high-speed rail, payments and driving in Guilin & Yangshuo for Hong Kong travelers in 2026.
Bottom line: Most travelers from Hong Kong reach Guilin by connecting through a major hub, then a domestic flight or high-speed train to Guilin Liangjiang Airport. Plan 5-6 days and travel in spring or autumn for the best weather.
Most international travelers depart from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station (high-speed rail) and Hong Kong International Airport. The high-speed train is the default: direct trains run from West Kowloon to Guilin West in about 3.5-4 hours, and far more frequent services with one change at Guangzhou South or Shenzhen North take a similar total time. Direct flights between Hong Kong and Guilin operate seasonally and take about 1.5 hours, but the train is usually more reliable and drops you closer to the Li River route.
AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK both work at mainland merchants that accept Alipay and WeChat Pay, so many Hong Kong travelers need no new app at all. Alternatively, link a Hong Kong-issued Visa or Mastercard to the mainland Alipay app as a backup — our digital setup guide covers both paths, plus the real-name verification to finish before you travel.
A Hong Kong driving licence is not valid for driving in mainland China on its own. Hong Kong residents can apply for a mainland licence through the long-standing reciprocal arrangement, but the paperwork takes planning; most visitors simply use trains, DiDi, or hire a car with a local driver. See our car rental guide for the realistic options.
Guilin's climate will feel familiar: hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters. The comfortable windows are April-May and September-November. Typhoon season can disrupt summer train and flight schedules, so build in slack if you travel between July and September. Hong Kong uses 220V Type G plugs; the mainland uses Type A/C/I, so bring a universal adapter. Hong Kong and the mainland share the same time zone (UTC+8), so no adjustment is needed.
Hong Kong permanent residents enter the mainland with the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (the Home Return Permit, 回乡证) — no visa is needed. If you live in Hong Kong on another passport, the rules of your passport's nationality apply instead, including the visa-free arrangements and the 240-hour transit program described in our visa-free travel guide. Confirm your document validity before booking.

Hong Kong permanent residents use the Home Return Permit (回乡证) and need no visa. If you are a Hong Kong resident travelling on a foreign passport, your passport nationality's rules apply — check our visa-free guide for the current arrangements.
Yes. AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK are accepted at mainland merchants that take Alipay and WeChat Pay, which in Guilin and Yangshuo covers most restaurants, ticket counters, and taxi drivers. Keep a linked bank card or topped-up balance, and carry some cash as a backup for small rural vendors.
For most travelers, the train. Direct West Kowloon to Guilin West services take about 3.5-4 hours with city-centre departure and no airport queues; flights are about 1.5 hours in the air but seasonal and less frequent. If the direct trains are full, change at Guangzhou South or Shenzhen North — the total journey is similar.
Not directly. Hong Kong licences are not valid on their own in the mainland; residents can apply for a mainland licence under the reciprocal arrangement, but it requires paperwork in advance. Most Hong Kong visitors use trains, DiDi, or a car with a driver — see our car rental guide.
Mandarin is the working language in Guilin and Yangshuo, though you will hear Cantonese in parts of Guangxi and many tourist-facing staff recognise common Cantonese phrases. English is limited outside major hotels, so a translation app is worth having whichever Chinese you speak.
