Bottom line: The two essential Guilin road trips are Guilin–Yangshuo (65 km, easy) and Guilin–Longji (95 km, mountain roads). Add a 3, 5, or 7-day itinerary to link them into one loop.

Important: Check your legal eligibility before renting a car

International Driving Permits are not officially recognized for driving in mainland China. You need a valid Chinese driver's license to rent and drive a car legally. Always verify current requirements with the rental provider and local traffic authority before you book.

The most popular drive in the region follows the G321 and parallel country roads toward Yangshuo. You can stop at Xingping for the famous 20-yuan viewpoint, visit Yulong River, and reach Yangshuo in time for sunset. The route largely mirrors the scenic Li River corridor.

Road conditions: Mostly paved two- to four-lane roads with good signage. The G321 has more trucks and buses; parallel country roads are slower but more scenic. Visibility is generally good; watch for scooters and farm vehicles near villages.

Highlights: Xingping viewpoint, Yulong River bridge, Yangshuo countryside, West Street.

Parking: Use your hotel lot in Yangshuo. Xingping has a large paid lot near the river.

What the drive is actually like

This is one of the most pleasant drives in southern China. The highway portion is smooth and fast, but the real magic starts when you turn onto the country roads. You'll pass through villages where farmers dry rice on the roadside, cross the Yulong River on small bridges, and suddenly find yourself surrounded by the karst peaks you've seen in every Guilin postcard.

The road is flat and well-maintained, but watch for scooters and cyclists — they often ride in the middle of the lane. Parking in Yangshuo can be tight near West Street, so use your hotel lot and walk or rent a bike for local exploring.

On a test drive in late October, we stopped at a roadside stall near Xingping for fresh-cut sugarcane juice (¥5). The vendor — who spoke no English — pointed us to a small dirt path leading to a viewpoint that wasn't on any map. That's the kind of moment a rental car gives you.

Guilin to Longji Rice Terraces MODERATE

95 km · 2.5 hours · Narrow mountain switchbacks, steep grades

This drive climbs from the Li River valley into the Longji Rice Terraces mountain area. The final 30 km are narrow and winding, with terraces opening up around every bend. Plan to arrive before dark.

Road conditions: The first section is a good paved highway. The last 25–30 km are narrow mountain road with switchbacks, limited passing places, and occasional fog. Drive slowly, use headlights in tunnels, and allow faster local vehicles to pass when safe.

Highlights: Longji Rice Terraces, Ping'an and Dazhai villages, minority culture, sunrise viewpoints.

Parking: Paid parking at the main entrance gates. Some hotels offer shuttle pickup from the lot.

What the drive is actually like

The first hour from Guilin is easy highway driving — wide lanes, clear signs, and moderate traffic. But once you exit at Longsheng, everything changes. The road narrows to a single lane in each direction, hugs the mountainside, and you'll share it with scooters carrying bamboo, farm trucks, and the occasional tour bus.

It's not dangerous if you drive carefully, but it demands full attention. Every switchback reveals another layer of terraces, and the villages seem to float on the mountainside. We recommend starting before 2 PM so you arrive before sunset — mountain fog rolls in quickly after 5 PM, and the road becomes much harder to navigate.

During our March route check, a farm truck loaded with bamboo forced us to reverse 50 meters to a passing point. It took two minutes. The driver waved apologetically. This is normal on Longji's mountain road — patience is more important than speed.

Our advice: Fill up your tank in Longsheng town. There are no gas stations in the mountains, and the last 30 km will use more fuel than you expect due to the steep climbs.
