Australian Traveler: Setting Up Alipay, Maps, and VPN Before Guilin

I flew from Sydney to Guilin for a six-day trip and was warned by a friend that Australia-based cards and apps often fail in China. Before leaving I read the China digital setup guide and installed Alipay, Baidu Maps, and a VPN on both my phone and a backup device.

The guide was right about mobile payments. Most small restaurants and street vendors in Guilin and Yangshuo accepted Alipay, and the few that did not were happy with cash. Baidu Maps was far more accurate than Google Maps for walking around West Street and finding our hotel car park.

The VPN worked about eighty percent of the time, which was enough for messaging home but not reliable for video calls from Longji. Downloading offline maps before each day saved us more than once, especially when signal dropped in the terraces.

If you are traveling from Australia, do not wait until you arrive to sort out payments and maps. Install and test everything in Sydney, link a card to Alipay, and download offline maps for Guilin, Yangshuo, and Longji before you leave your accommodation each morning.
