Where to base yourself, how to split your days, and which town fits your trip style.
Bottom line: Spend 1-2 days in Guilin city and 2-3 days in Yangshuo. For a first trip, base yourself in Yangshuo. Guilin is the transport hub with museums and city dining; Yangshuo has the iconic karst countryside, e-bikes, and rivers.
Guilin and Yangshuo are 65 km apart and often paired, but they feel different. Guilin is a real city with airports, trains, and malls; Yangshuo is a small county town wrapped in peaks and rice fields. Here is how to choose.
| Factor | Guilin | Yangshuo |
|---|---|---|
| Headline sights | Elephant Trunk Hill, city parks | Li River, Yulong River, karst peaks |
| Food | More variety, mifen, local dining | Beer fish, West Street cafes |
| Nightlife | Quieter, night cruise | Livelier West Street bars |
| Transport hub | Airport + high-speed rail | Bus/train to Guilin only |
| Nature access | Short drives to sights | Walk/e-bike to countryside |
| Best for | Arrival, city day, transit | Scenery, e-bikes, slow stays |
Choose based on what you value most. The two towns are only 65 km apart, but the experience is very different.
| What you want | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Iconic scenery | Yangshuo | Li River, karst peaks, Yulong River and countryside are all around town. |
| Easy transport | Guilin | Airport, high-speed rail, and more direct routes from major cities. |
| Food variety | Guilin | More local restaurants, rice-noodle streets, and city dining. |
| Nightlife & bars | Yangshuo | West Street has the liveliest traveller bar and cafe scene. |
| E-bikes & cycling | Yangshuo | Flat countryside lanes start minutes from town. |
| First-time base | Yangshuo | Most first-timers base here and do Guilin as a day trip. |
| Photography | Yangshuo + Xingping | 20-yuan viewpoint, Xianggong Mountain, and Yulong bridges. |
| City comfort | Guilin | Better business hotels, international chains, and shopping. |
Most travellers use both: Guilin for arrival and departure, Yangshuo for the main stay. A typical first trip is 1-2 nights in Guilin and 2-4 nights in Yangshuo.
Guilin is where you fly in and where the high-speed trains stop, so it is the natural arrival and departure point. The city has the best restaurant variety, the Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise, and easy day trips (Reed Flute Cave, Daxu old town). If you like museums, malls, and a bigger dining scene, you will enjoy a Guilin day. It is also the place to handle logistics - SIM cards, bank visits, and onward tickets.
Yangshuo is where the postcard scenery lives. From town you reach the Li River, the Yulong River bamboo rafts, the Ten Mile Gallery, and Xingping within a short e-bike or car ride. The pace is slower, the air cleaner, and the light on the peaks at dawn is the reason most people come. For e-bikes, countryside loops, and photography, Yangshuo wins clearly. See the Yangshuo guide for the sights.
| Trip length | Guilin | Yangshuo | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | 1 day | 2 days | City highlights + countryside |
| 5 days | 1-2 days | 3 days | Add Longji as a day trip |
| 7 days | 2 days | 4 days | Include Longji overnight + Xingping |
These splits assume you cruise Guilin to Yangshuo on the middle day, so you do not backtrack. The 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day plans use exactly these ratios.
Guilin and Yangshuo are 65 km apart. The Li River cruise takes about 4 hours and is the scenic link; buses and the high-speed train take 1.5-2 hours; self-drive is 1.5 hours via the G65 expressway. Most travelers cruise one way and take a bus or car back, or simply base in Yangshuo and day-trip. See the Guilin to Yangshuo guide for the full comparison.
Yangshuo and Guilin have similar hotel and food prices, but Yangshuo's countryside resorts and riverside rooms command a premium for the view, while Guilin's business hotels are better value near the station. Both use the same apps (Alipay, WeChat Pay) and the same price bands. The bigger cost difference is transport: staying put in one town saves on transfers and avoids packing and unpacking.
Guilin day: Elephant Trunk Hill at open, a late breakfast of rice noodles, the night cruise or a lakeside walk, dinner near the city wall. Yangshuo day: a Yulong River raft at 8 am, an e-bike loop past Moon Hill, a riverside lunch, and West Street in the evening. The two days feel completely different - city versus countryside.
Neither town is "better" - they are different tools. Use Guilin to arrive, handle logistics, and eat well; use Yangshuo to slow down and see the scenery that made the region famous. Most good trips use both, just in the right proportion for your style.
Guilin and Yangshuo are 65 km apart and linked by four options. The high-speed train is fastest at about 30 minutes, but note the Yangshuo station sits near Xingping, roughly 30 minutes by bus or taxi from Yangshuo town β so "Yangshuo train" is not "Yangshuo center." The direct bus from Guilin bus station to Yangshuo town takes about 1.5β2 hours and drops you in the center, which is more convenient if you are not renting a car. A private car or DiDi costs roughly Β₯200β300 and door-to-door is 1β1.5 hours. The Li River cruise is the scenic choice (4 hours, Β₯300β500) and ends in Yangshuo. If you self-drive, budget 1.5 hours plus parking time at each end.
With children or older travelers, lean toward Yangshuo for its flat, e-bike-friendly countryside and shorter transfer times, and keep Guilin for a single relaxed city day rather than back-to-back moves. Build in a rest afternoon and pick accommodation within walking distance of food and the river so you are not shuttling every day.
Staying in Guilin city runs a little cheaper for hotels (more supply, more competition) but you pay more in transfers to the countryside. Staying in Yangshuo costs a bit more per room but saves daily transport and lets you ride an e-bike to most sights for Β₯30β50/day. For a couple, a Yangshuo base typically totals similar or slightly less than a Guilin base once you factor in the daily shuttling. Solo travelers on a tight budget do best with a Guilin hostel for the city day and one or two Yangshuo nights.
For the accommodation side of this choice, read our Guilin vs Yangshuo where-to-stay guide and the Yangshuo areas guide.
For a first trip, base in Yangshuo (2-3 nights) and use Guilin for arrival, departure, or a single city day. Yangshuo has the iconic karst countryside; Guilin is the transport and dining hub.
On 3 days: 1 in Guilin, 2 in Yangshuo. On 5 days: 1-2 in Guilin, 3 in Yangshuo. On 7 days: 2 in Guilin (or 1 + Longji), 4 in Yangshuo and Xingping.
Yes for a day: Elephant Trunk Hill, the Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise, and good restaurants. But the region's headline scenery is around Yangshuo, not in the city itself.
You can, but it wastes 3 hours of driving/cruise time each way. Staying in Yangshuo lets you use early morning and evening for the countryside.
Yangshuo - the countryside (Yulong River, Ten Mile Gallery, Xingping) is made for a car. Guilin city driving is heavier and less scenic.
Yangshuo's West Street is livelier for travelers (bars, cafes, shows). Guilin has more local dining and a quieter evening cruise scene.
3-5 days total. 1 day Guilin, 2-4 days Yangshuo.
Yangshuo β more romantic scenery, cycling, bamboo rafting, and boutique hotels.
