Bottom line: Most travelers from Russia reach Guilin by connecting through a major hub, then a domestic flight or high-speed train to Guilin Liangjiang Airport. Plan 5-6 days and travel in spring or autumn for the best weather.

Flights & getting there from Russia

Most international travelers depart from Moscow and St Petersburg. There are no scheduled nonstop flights between Russia and Guilin as of September 2026. Common routes fly Moscow or St Petersburg to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Urumqi, then continue by domestic flight to Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) or by high-speed train from Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Total travel time is usually 12-18 hours door to door, and an overnight stop in a hub city often makes the long journey more comfortable.

Paying with Alipay & cards

Mir cards are not widely accepted in mainland China outside a few border cities. The practical choices are to link a Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay, or to carry Chinese yuan (CNY) cash exchanged before arrival. Most Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard cards can be linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay after in-app identity verification, which is best completed before departure. Our digital setup guide walks through registration and verification.

Driving & licenses

A Russian driving licence is not valid for driving in mainland China on its own, and China does not recognise the International Driving Permit. To self-drive you would need a Chinese licence. Most Russian visitors use high-speed trains, DiDi taxis, or a private car with a local driver. See our car rental guide for the realistic options.

Best time to visit

Russian winters are far harsher than Guilin's, so almost any season feels mild by comparison. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best mix of scenery and comfortable temperatures. Summer (June-August) is hot, humid, and busy; winter (December-February) is quiet, cool, and often misty β€” atmospheric for photography if you pack a warm layer. Russia uses 220V Type C/F plugs; China uses 220V Type A/C/I. A Euro-to-China adapter or a universal adapter is essential. Most modern chargers support 100-240V, so voltage is rarely an issue. China is 5 hours ahead of Moscow in standard time. Russia spans multiple time zones, so check your departure city. Neither country observes daylight-saving time consistently, so the gap stays stable through most of the year.

Visa & entry

As of September 2026, Russian citizens can travel visa-free in organised groups of 5 or more people for up to 15 days under the China-Russia group-tourism agreement. Individual tourists and smaller groups generally need a tourist (L) visa arranged in advance. Rules change, so confirm with the Chinese embassy or an authorised visa centre before booking. Our visa-free travel guide explains the transit options.

Five to six days covers Guilin city, the Li River, Yangshuo, and a Longji side trip. Given the long flight from Russia, many travellers fold Guilin into a longer China itinerary. Our itinerary guides map it day by day.

Russian and European-style restaurants are very limited in Guilin and Yangshuo. You will find some Western cafΓ©s in Yangshuo's West Street, but the default cuisine is local Chinese. Travellers who prefer bread, dairy, and meat-heavy meals may want to self-cater some breakfasts.
