Bottom line: Most international travelers reach Guilin by connecting flight to KWL or by high-speed rail from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Hong Kong. The airport is 28 km from downtown: Β₯20 by bus or Β₯80-120 by taxi, 30-45 minutes. If Yangshuo is your real destination, direct airport buses save a transfer.

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) has direct flights from most major Chinese cities and a small number of international destinations in Asia. International travelers typically connect through:

Flight time from Guangzhou is about 1 hour; from Shanghai about 2.5 hours. Book domestic Chinese flights through Trip.com, airline apps, or travel agents.

KWL is 28 km southwest of downtown. Three options, and the right one depends on your luggage and where in the city you are staying:

OptionCostTimeBest for
Airport busΒ₯2040–60 minBudget, light luggage, downtown hotels
Taxi / DiDiΒ₯80–12030–45 minGroups, heavy luggage, late arrivals
Hotel pickupΒ₯100–20030–45 minFirst visit, arranged in advance

Airport direct to Yangshuo

If Yangshuo is your actual destination β€” and for most visitors it is β€” you can skip Guilin city entirely. Direct airport buses run from KWL to Yangshuo, and a private transfer is straightforward to arrange.

OptionCostTimeNotes
Direct airport busΒ₯50–701.5–2 hoursRuns to Yangshuo bus station; check the timetable against your flight
Private transferΒ₯300–4501.5 hoursDoor to door; worth it for groups of 3–4
Bus into Guilin, then onwardΒ₯20 + Β₯25–402.5–3 hoursCheapest but slowest, with a change

The direct bus is the best value if the timetable works. Confirm departure times before you fly, since they follow flight arrivals rather than a fixed schedule, and the last service is usually early evening β€” a late flight may force a private transfer. If you are staying out by the river, arrange the final leg with your guesthouse in advance; see the Yulong River area guide.

High-speed rail

High-speed rail is often the most convenient way to reach Guilin from southern and western China, and it avoids the airport transfer entirely if your onward destination is another Chinese city.

RouteTimeArrival stationNotes
Guangzhou β€” Guilin2.5–3 hoursGuilin North / Guilin StationMost frequent; departures throughout the day
Shenzhen β€” Guilin3–3.5 hoursGuilin NorthGood for Hong Kong transfers
Hong Kong β€” Guilin3.5–4 hoursGuilin West / Guilin NorthPassport required; book early
Guiyang β€” Guilin2–2.5 hoursGuilin North / WestWestern approach
Changsha β€” Guilin2.5–3 hoursGuilin NorthNorth–south axis
Beijing / Shanghai β€” Guilin8–11 hoursGuilin North / WestOvernight sleeper, or fly instead

Tickets can be purchased through Trip.com, 12306 (Chinese-only), or station counters. Book high-speed rail tickets 7–14 days ahead in normal season, and 2–3 weeks ahead for Chinese public holidays. Car rentals should be booked 7–14 days ahead in peak season (April–May, September–October) and 2–3 days ahead in low season (November–March).

The three stations, and which to choose

Guilin has three stations and they are not interchangeable. Booking the wrong one costs you an hour.

StationDistance from downtownServesChoose it if
Guilin Station (ζ‘‚ζž—η«™)Central, ~3 kmConventional and some high-speed servicesYou are staying in the city centre
Guilin North (ζ‘‚ζž—εŒ—η«™)~8 km northMost high-speed arrivals from the south and eastArriving by high-speed rail (most common)
Guilin West (ζ‘‚ζž—θ₯Ώη«™)~12 km westSome high-speed services, incl. from Hong KongYour train only stops here

Guilin North is where most high-speed trains from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Changsha arrive, and it is the station most visitors will use. It is about 20–30 minutes from the city centre by taxi (Β₯25–40) or DiDi. Guilin Station is the most central and convenient if your hotel is downtown, but serves fewer high-speed services. Guilin West is the furthest out; if your ticket lands there, budget 40 minutes and Β₯40–60 for the transfer.

Check the station name on your ticket carefully β€” the characters β€” (north) and β€” (west) are easy to miss, and the mistake is expensive at 6 am.

Onward to Yangshuo

Most visitors are not staying in Guilin β€” they are going to Yangshuo. From the city, four options:

OptionCostTimeBest for
High-speed rail to YangshuoΒ₯20–40~30 min train + 40 min transferSpeed; but the station is near Xingping, not town
Bus from Guilin SouthΒ₯25–401.5–2 hoursCheapest; drops in Yangshuo town
Li River cruiseΒ₯300–800~4 hoursScenery; one-way only
Car or private driverΒ₯200–4001–1.5 hoursFlexibility, families, luggage

The rail option has a catch worth knowing: Yangshuo Railway Station is actually near Xingping, about 30–40 minutes from Yangshuo town, so the saving in train time is partly lost in the transfer. If you are heading straight to town, the bus is often simpler; if you want Xingping, the train is ideal. Long-distance bus

Buses connect Guilin to Yangshuo, Longsheng, Sanjiang, and nearby cities. Guilin Main Bus Station and Guilin North Bus Station are the main terminals. Buses are cheaper than trains but slower and less comfortable for long distances. See our Guilin to Yangshuo transport guide for the most popular bus route.

Visa & entry notes

Check current Chinese visa requirements before booking. Some travelers qualify for visa-free transit or regional policies. Carry your passport for train tickets, hotel check-in, and car rental pickup. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive β€” airport taxis and buses increasingly expect it, and foreign cards are unreliable at small counters.

Source & verification: Times and fares are September 2026 estimates from public timetables and operator listings. Confirm current schedules before travel, especially for airport bus departures and holiday-period rail availability.
