Bottom line: Yangshuo's true white water is the Longjing River northeast of town — guided rafts on graded rapids, roughly ¥150-220 a seat, seasonal (about April-October, water-dependent). Do not confuse it with the Yulong bamboo raft, which is a calm scenic float. You will get wet; you do not need experience.

Rafting vs the bamboo raft

This is the most common point of confusion. The famous Yulong River bamboo raft is a slow, seated drift on flat green water — beautiful and relaxing, but not rafting. The Longjing River is the genuine article: a guide-steer一 raft down graded rapids with splash, speed and the occasional soak. Same region, completely different day.

The Longjing River

The Longjing River (龙颈河) runs northeast of Yangshuo through a wooded karst gorge. In season the water level supports a run of rapids graded for first-timers and intermediates, with a trained guide on each raft. The surroundings are greener and less built-up than the central Yangshuo reaches, which is part of the appeal.

Costs and season

Source & verification: Prices are typical 2026 estimates and the run is water-dependent. Confirm the operator is operating the day before you go; dry spells or heavy rain can pause it.

Getting there

Public transport

Most people book through a Yangshuo operator who includes a transfer from your hotel or West Street. A taxi can also reach the base, about 20 km out of town, but a pre-arranged transfer is simpler for an early start.

Self-drive

Driving yourself works if you want flexibility: park at the rafting base and you control the day. Pair it with a self-drive loop or a multi-day itinerary. An e-bike is not practical for the 20 km out — save it for the Yulong lanes another day.

Safety

Guided rafting is run by licensed operators with life jackets and helmets provided and a guide on every raft. Stay seated and follow the guide's instructions, especially in the bigger rapids. The run closes in unsafe water, so trust the operator's call. Tell them if anyone in your group is not a confident swimmer.

Pair it with calmer water

Rafting is a half-day adrenaline hit; balance it with the region's quiet water. A SUP session or kayak tour on the Yulong gives you the calm version, and a riverside hike shows the same bends on foot. For the scenic cruise alternative, see the Li River cruise guide.
