Walk 2-3 days through Yangshuo's karst — Moon Hill, the Yulong River, Laozhai and village lanes, sleeping in guesthouses along the way. Light, scenic, forgiving.
Bottom line: A Yangshuo multi-day hike is a relaxed 2-3 day walk through karst countryside rather than a remote trek — you are never far from a village or guesthouse. Link Moon Hill, the Yulong River and Laozhai, sleep in riverside lodges (about ¥100-300/night), and hike light. Best in April-June and September-November.
Doing Yangshuo on foot over several days changes the rhythm. Instead of ticking viewpoints from a vehicle, you move through the landscape at walking pace — rice fields in the morning, a river bend at noon, a karst ridge at dusk. Because the paths connect villages, you can walk all day and still eat well and sleep in a bed, which makes a 'trek' accessible to ordinary fitness.
| Day | Route | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yangshuo - Ten Mile Gallery - Moon Hill | Flat lanes, Moon Hill arch climb |
| 2 | Yulong River paths - Fuli Bridge - villages | Riverside walking, old bridge, guesthouse night |
| 3 | Xingping - Laozhai Mountain - 20 RMB viewpoint | Li River bend, optional steep summit |
This is a template, not a fixed trail — shorten or extend any day. The hiking trails guide has the individual routes; the Xianggong sunrise guide can replace day three's dawn if you want a higher viewpoint.
Guesthouses cluster in the Yulong villages and around Moon Hill; Xingping has more choice for the final night. Some operators use a campsite for one night under the peaks. We do not name specific properties — standards and management change — so choose by area, review score and price band, and book ahead in spring-autumn.

Base in Yangshuo town, take a bus or taxi to your day-one trailhead, and use local shuttles or short taxis between stages if you skip a section. Buses reach Xingping for the final day.
A car is the easy option for a multi-day walk: leave the big bag at your base, drive to each stage start, and let a self-drive day handle luggage shuttling. An e-bike works for the flat Yulong stages and lets you ride the bits you would rather not walk. See the Yulong cycling guide for the same roads.
For photographers, walking gives you the best light windows — our photography spots guide maps them.
Yes. The countryside is a connected mesh of riverside paths, village lanes and karst trails, so you can walk 2-3 days linking Moon Hill, the Yulong River, Laozhai Mountain and quiet hamlets, sleeping in guesthouses along the way. It is more 'long walk through a landscape' than 'wilderness trek'.
Mostly the latter — you are rarely far from a village, a cafe or a guesthouse, which makes it forgiving. The karst scenery is the payoff, not isolation. If you want genuine remote terrain, the Longji terraces offer steeper, longer ridge walks.
Guesthouses and small hotels sit in and between the Yulong villages and around Moon Hill; some operators use campsites for a night under the peaks. Budget roughly ¥100-300 per night depending on standard. Book ahead in spring-autumn.
Not strictly — the popular paths are walked and signed. A guide helps with route choice, sunrise timing, and language at small lodgings, and is worth it if you want a coherent 2-3 day line rather than improvising.
Comfortable day-hike fitness is enough. Daily distances are modest (10-18 km) on mixed flat and hilly ground; the hard bits (Laozhai, Moon Hill stairs) are optional add-ons you can skip.
Daypack with water, layers, rain shell, sunscreen and a headlamp; a change of clothes at the guesthouse each night. Leave the heavy bag at your Yangshuo base and hike light, or have a driver shuttle your luggage between stops.
A 2-3 day route shows Yangshuo most visitors never see.
