Bottom line: Base in Yangshuo for the scenery and spend one night in Guilin at the start or end for flights and trains. The karst landscape, cycling, rafting and climbing are all around Yangshuo; Guilin is the transport hub you pass through.

Whatever split you choose, avoid changing hotels more than twice β€” packing and transfers eat real time on a short trip. More detail on each area is in where to stay in Guilin and Yangshuo, with dedicated pages for West Street and the Yulong River.

Day-tripping either way

Both directions work, but with different trade-offs. Yangshuo from Guilin is a common and workable day trip β€” see our honest day-trip answer β€” though you give up the morning and evening. The reverse, Guilin city sights from Yangshuo, is easier and less missed: the city's highlights are compact and can be seen in a day. Longji, however, is a Guilin-side trip and not a realistic day out from Yangshuo.

Getting between Guilin and Yangshuo

The two are 65 km apart, and you will probably travel the leg at least once. Knowing which option suits which situation saves real time.

OptionTimeCostBest for
Li River cruise (one way)about 4 hΒ₯215+Doing it once, scenic arrival
High-speed rail1.5 h + transferΒ₯20-30Speed, if staying near Xingping
Direct bus1.5-2 hΒ₯20-30Cheapest, drops in Yangshuo town
Private carabout 1.5 hΒ₯300-400Groups, luggage, door to door

One trap worth repeating: Yangshuo railway station is about 30 km from West Street, closer to Xingping. If your hotel is in Yangshuo town, the bus is often faster door-to-door than the train despite being slower on paper. Full detail is in the Guilin to Yangshuo transport guide.

Cost comparison between the bases

Neither base is dramatically more expensive, but the patterns differ. Yangshuo has a wider spread β€” hostels and guesthouses at the bottom, boutique riverside properties at the top β€” while Guilin is more uniformly mid-range with better business-hotel value.

Rates in both places move sharply with the holiday calendar. A mid-range double that is Β₯250-400 in a normal week can double during the first week of October. Book ahead if your dates touch a holiday.

Where to stay within each base

In Guilin, staying near the city centre or the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area puts the main sights, restaurants and the railway stations within easy reach. Drivers should prioritise hotels with parking β€” see where to stay in Guilin and Yangshuo.

In Yangshuo, the choice matters more:

Mistakes people make

Does the season change the answer?

Broadly no β€” Yangshuo is the better base in every season β€” but it changes the margins. In the wet months (June-July) a Yangshuo base is even more clearly right, because you want flexibility to swap outdoor plans at short notice and the city offers more wet-weather options. In the clear autumn months, Guilin earns an extra night because Longji and its harvest season become worth the detour.

One genuine exception: if you are travelling in deep winter and dislike cold, damp rural guesthouses, Guilin's heated city hotels are the more comfortable call. Yangshuo's charm is outdoors, and in January that matters.

A note for drivers and road-trippers

If you are renting a car, the base decision shifts slightly. Guilin has the airport pickup, the rental desks and easier city driving; Yangshuo has the roads worth driving. A common pattern that works well: pick up the car in Guilin, drive to Longji, then end in Yangshuo and return the vehicle there or drive back on your departure day.

Parking is the practical constraint in Yangshuo β€” choose accommodation with a dedicated lot rather than assuming you will find street parking near West Street. See hotels with parking for that filter.

The bottom line

Spend one night in Guilin at the start or end of your trip and put everything else into Yangshuo. If you have five days or more, consider a night at Longji as well. This pattern works for first-time visitors, for families, and for repeat travellers alike β€” and it is the one we would follow ourselves.

The only travellers who should reverse it are those with a genuine reason to be near the airport or railway station every day, and those who actively prefer cities to countryside. Everyone else is here for the karst, and the karst is around Yangshuo.

Still unsure? Split it: one night in Guilin on arrival, then move. You can always add a night back in the city at the end if you find yourself wanting more restaurants and fewer rice paddies.

Frequently asked questions

Most travellers should base in Yangshuo and use Guilin as the arrival and departure point. Yangshuo has the karst countryside, cycling, rafting and climbing; Guilin has the airport, railway stations and city sights.

For three days, one night Guilin and two Yangshuo works well. For five days, consider two Guilin (or one Guilin plus one Longji) and three Yangshuo.

Yes, but you spend three to four hours travelling and miss the best morning and evening light. See our honest day-trip answer.

Guilin, by a wide margin. Longji is 95 km north of Guilin and there is no direct link from Yangshuo β€” you would route back through Guilin.

Yangshuo for countryside cycling, easy rafting and space to run around; Guilin city for museums, parks and easier logistics with small children.
