Bottom line: The real Yangshuo is in the backroads between the main highway and the Yulong River. These narrow lanes are shared with farmers, scooters, and the occasional buffalo cart โ€” and they offer the most authentic cycling experience.

What makes the backroads special

Unlike the Ten-Mile Gallery main road, the backroads have no fixed itinerary. You can follow any lane that heads toward the Yulong River and eventually find scenery. Travelers report that the area between Jima Pier and Jiuxian Village is especially peaceful, with old stone houses, drying crops, and farmers working in the fields.

Suggested wandering loop

  1. Start at Gongnong Bridge and head upstream along the river.
  2. Turn into the lanes near Jima Pier.
  3. Continue toward Jiuxian Village for lunch.
  4. Return via a different lane to see new scenery.
