The 83 km stretch of the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is the heart of the region's fame. Two main ways to experience it are from the water on a cruise, or from the road with a rental car or driver. Each has distinct advantages.

Li River cruise experience

The standard cruise takes about 4 hours from a Guilin pier to Yangshuo. You pass the karst peaks, bamboo groves, and village scenes that appear on Chinese currency and countless postcards. It is relaxing, fully scenic, and requires no driving.

Self-drive experience

Driving from Guilin to Yangshuo lets you stop at Xingping, Yulong River, and viewpoints on your own schedule. You miss the water-level cruise views but gain access to sunrise spots and back roads.

• Duration: 1–1.5 hours direct, longer with stops
• Best for: independent travelers, families, repeat visitors
• Cost: rental car ¥200–550/day (US$29–79) + fuel + parking

How to combine both

Many travelers choose to do both. The most practical plan:

1. Drive from Guilin to Yangshuo and check into your hotel.
2. The next morning, take a taxi or DiDi back to Guilin for the cruise departure.
3. Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, arriving near your hotel where your car is waiting.
4. Use the following days to explore Yangshuo and Longji by car.

Cannot drive? Here's what to do instead

A Chinese driver's license is required to rent and drive in mainland China. If you do not have one, you still have excellent options for exploring Guilin:

• Private driver: Flexible door-to-door service, especially good for families or groups. Negotiate the route and stops in advance.
• Organized day tours: Cost-effective for Longji and Yangshuo highlights without the navigation stress.
