Bottom line: Impression Liu Sanjie is an evening outdoor show on the Li River near Yangshuo, directed by Zhang Yimou. Allow about 70 minutes, book ahead in peak season, and bring a light jacket — the seating is open-air and cools after dark.

Why this is Yangshuo's signature evening

Most Guilin attractions are about looking at the landscape. Impression Liu Sanjie flips that: it turns the landscape into the theatre. The karst peaks you photographed all day become the backdrop, the Li River becomes the stage, and several hundred performers — local villagers, fishermen with cormorants, and singers — move across the water in a score of light and song. It is the one Yangshuo experience built entirely around the place itself, which is why it has run to packed houses since it premiered in 2004.

For independent travellers who have spent the day cycling or driving the countryside, it is also the natural way to end a day: you trade the scooter for a seat, and watch the scenery you just travelled through perform back at you.

What the show actually is

Impression Liu Sanjie (印象·刘三姐) is a large-scale "real-scene" outdoor performance directed by Zhang Yimou, the filmmaker behind films such as Hero and the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It draws on the legend of Liu Sanjie, a Zhuang ethnic-minority folk-singing heroine who became a symbol of Guangxi's song culture.

Rather than a stage with a painted backdrop, the production uses the actual river and mountains. Performers appear as moving points of light across the water; fishing boats and cormorants are part of the cast; and the scale is what visitors remember — hundreds of people, no proscenium, the peaks rising straight up behind them. It is spectacle first, narrative second, and it does not need to be followed closely to be enjoyed.

Where it is staged

The show takes place on the Li River about 1.5 km from Yangshuo's West Street. There is no conventional theatre; you are seated on open-air tiered stands facing the water, with the karst skyline as the permanent set. The location means the view changes with the weather — a clear night gives the cleanest peaks, while mist and rain turn the scene softer and more atmospheric (the show rarely cancels for weather, but refunds or rain checks apply if it does).

Show times and season

Performances are in the evening, usually beginning around 19:30, with a second show added on busy nights in peak season. Start times shift with the season, so confirm the schedule when you book. Spring through autumn is the most reliable window for clear skies, but the show runs year-round.

Tickets and how to buy

Seats are sold in sections, from ordinary stands to premium central rows. Typical 2026 prices run about ¥320 for ordinary seats up to ¥680 for the best central sections, with peak-season and front-row premiums on top. Book through your hotel, a Yangshuo ticket office, or an online platform a day or two ahead in high season — the central sections sell out first because they face the cleanest slice of the peaks.

How to get there

From Yangshuo West Street, the venue is about a 10-minute drive or a short e-bike ride along the river road. Taxis and rides are easy to find in the evening; if you drive, arrive early because the road and car parks fill before showtime. Many visitors combine the show with dinner in town and walk or ride over afterwards. See our Yangshuo e-bike rental guide if you want to ride there.

Tips for a good night

Impression vs the Li River cruise

They are different experiences, and many visitors do both. The Li River cruise is a relaxed float past the famous gorges and the 20-yuan viewpoint, best by day. Impression Liu Sanjie is a large evening show built on that same river and those same peaks, best after dark. If your time is short, choose the cruise for scenery and the show for spectacle — or pair them on a single Yangshuo evening if the schedule allows.

See it in context

The show grows out of the same river culture you can meet more directly through cormorant fishing at Xingping, where the Li River's working fishermen still perform the old method at dusk. For the respectful way to meet local traditions, see our Guilin culture bridge guide.
